I realize one thing missing

I realize one thing missing from Radio Userland weblogs is there’s no place to comment on entries or add a discussion, as it was possible to do on EditThisPage.com. That’s also one of the features I really like about LiveJournal.

No More Popup Ads. This

No More Popup Ads. This site provides a series of links to opt out of many popup ads.

I consider popup ads the scourge of the internet. Besides the general annoyance, they can change the size of your default browser window. Many browsers will set the default window size when you close a window, so after closing one of those annoying ads, you’ll often find the next browser window you open the same size as that ad window, rather than a more reasonable size.

Steve Jobs And The Oh-So-Cool

Steve Jobs And The Oh-So-Cool iMac [Slashdot]

Gates understands something Jobs and media don’t. When it comes to technology, it’s middle-class consumers and their tastes, needs and expectations that determine success or failure. This is a hard lesson for many hackers and programmers too, who remain bewildered that superior systems like Linux aren’t on every desktop. But the middle class, for years abused and exploited by the arrogant tech industry (just think of what poor Comcast subscribers have been going through for weeks now), wants easy of use, safety, utility. Just consider at the telephone, the automobile, or for that matter, Wal-Mart. Apple has demonstrated for years, and so, to some degree, has Linux. Harry and Martha in Dubuque decide which products will enter the mainstream and last, not college kids editing movies or downloading music and DVDs, or using firewire ports to fiddle with video clips.

. It’s price. Apple always had the reputation of being expensive, even if it wasn’t always true. People rejected Macs because of the perception that they cost more than PCs.

Even just considering initial purchase price, rather than total cost of ownerships, Macs haven’t been more expensive than PCs for many years. Unfortunately old perceptions never die.

The truth is, Macs aren’t only about video, multimedia production, music, and other creative pursuits. Macs perform mainstream tasks like word processing and email just as well as PCs. Mac software runs more smoothly and has fewer problems than PC software.

Apple has this page to attempt to debunk some of the myths.

What's the longest anyone has

What’s the longest anyone has had a MacOS X system running without rebooting?

[blueg3:~] mike% uptime

8:01PM up 49 days, 4:06, 3 users, load averages: 2.20, 2.02, 2.01

This G3 is running as a server with my CVS repository for the projects I’m working on now as well as for testing code changes before I upload them to MacMegasite.

I’m going to try to keep it running without rebooting until I have to shut it down when I move, which will be some time in March 🙂

I just got back from

I just got back from Ft. Lauderdale (about 20 miles away), where I spent most of the afternoon signing papers & having my new home inspected. I was concerned because I was told no pets were allowed (it turns out *some* pets are allowed), but my next door neighbor has a cat.

I don’t think I’d be able to keep Cody hidden for too long. He’s not a quiet cat. When he wants something (even just some attention), he whines very loudly. He also goes on a rampage most nights, running around the house & jumping on everything.
