Tropical Storm Gustav is aiming in our direction. It’s already a strong tropical storm with 60 MPH winds.

Tropical Storm Fay Update II
It looks like TS Fay won’t hit South Florida, but it’s giving us a lot of rain & some flooding. It’s now heading for Naples and isn’t expected to develop into a hurricane. The rain will probably continue the rest of the night and tomorrow.
Tropical Storm Update
We’re out of the cone for Tropical Storm Fay right now, although that could change. It’s going to hit the west coast of Florida and move in our general direction. We probably won’t get the worst of it, but we’ll most likely get lots of rain & some wind. We have a tropical storm watch and all schools in Broward County are closed.
Another Photowalk
Paulo is planning another photowalk on August 23 in connection with Scott Kelby‘s Worldwide Photo Walk. This one will be in Lauderdale-by-the-sea, a quaint beach town only a few miles from me, at the end of Commercial Blvd. I’ve been there many times.
Photowalk wrap-up
Paulo posted a wrap-up and some pictures from the photo walk here.
There’s also a Flickr group where you can see the entire group’s pictures.
I survived the Photowalk
I had a great time at the Fort Lauderdale Photowalk today, and the weather cooperated, at least most of the time. We met at Las Olas Riverfront at around 9:30 AM. After the introductions, we went north on Brickell Avenue to SW 2nd Street.
We then went west, across the railroad tracks, to the Museum of Science & Discovery.
We then turned south to River Walk, where we continued back to the Riverfront plaza.
At this point, we stopped for some group photos and a few people left. We decided to cut the route short, since it was hot and most of us were tired. Instead of continuing to Las Olas Blvd, we went to Briny Pub for lunch & drinks.
It turned out to be a good decision, since it started raining while we were having lunch. By this time we were down to only 8 people, including Paulo, his wife and his son.
We decided to wait until it stopped raining, but it didn’t show any signs of stopping.
Finally, Paulo had to leave, so the 5 of us who remained went indoors since we were getting wet on the covered patio. While we were waiting, we took some pictures of the fish tank.
Finally, we made a run for it, even though it was still raining pretty hard. In all, we had a great time and I learned a lot from some of the professionals about focus, exposure, color balance, and photo processing.
There were more Canons than Nikons, and most of the Nikon owners had a D300 or other high end models.
I posted a full gallery of my photowalk pictures at Flickr.
Photowalk in Fort Lauderdale
Paulo Jordao is planning a photo walk in Fort Lauderdale some time next month. The details haven’t been finalized, but most likely it will be on June 21 or 22. The location is yet to be determined, possibly around Las Olas.
California may have cost Florida the election
I must be the only one who isn’t happy about California legalizing gay marriage.
We have a marriage ‘protection’ amendment on the ballot here in November. This decision in California is a dream come true for the amendment’s supporters. It will energize their base with the fear of it happening here and help them get out the vote. This means a much bigger Republican turnout.
Although Obama is already expected to lose Florida, this will almost certainly guarantee it and by a much bigger margin.
California could have done us (and the entire country) a big favor if they had waited until after the election to make this decision.
Oakland Park Youth Day
Today was Oakland Park’s Youth Day, one of our biggest events. I took over 2000 photos, which I’m still processing. I used the sport mode of the D40x and did lots of burst mode shooting of Brazilian Capoeira, Polynesian dancing, and martial arts events. Here’s the best shot I found so far. I managed to catch this guy in midair during a Capoeira demonstration. I’ll upload more photos when I finish sorting & processing them.
Aperture 2.1 had no problem handling that many photos in a single project. It took about 5 minutes to import from the memory card.
