Day 6 of renovation

The guys did more electrical work, closed up the walls where they could, applied textured surfacing to the walls & ceiling, and picked up the stove. They’re making lots of progress – if everything goes according to schedule, the cabinets & floor should be in by the end of the week and the washing machine & drier should be hooked up.

All of this mess is starting to take its toll, however. The cats are freaking out and I almost lost Midnight (more about that in another post), and the paint smell & dust is getting to me. I’ve been sneezing continuously all day.

Renovation Day 5

The guys took out the old tile today, sprayed the ceiling, closed up the walls (except for places they still needed to access pipes), and prepared the supports for the cabinets. They’re taking tomorrow off and will finish the plumbing work Monday & get ready to put in the cabinets.

Kitchen remodeling day 4

They had planned to replace the tile today, but the machine they needed to remove the old tile wasn’t available. They had reserved it yesterday, but it had been given to someone else. Instead, they moved the pipes behind the sink, did some electrical work, and put up supports for the cabinets.

Day 2 of renovation

The guys did more work on my kitchen today. The sink & remaining cabinets are gone, the washing machine & dryer have been removed and the wall opened so they can move the pipes. Tomorrow they’ll work on the pipes and hopefully get started on the re-wiring.

In a completely unrelated incident, a pipe outside my building broke today, so the water was shut off for my entire community for several hours. Another pipe in the same location broke a few years ago, flooding my patio.

Oktoberfest

Today was Oakland Park’s third annual Oktoberfest. It was lots of fun, with lots of food, music, and entertainment. I took about 300 pictures and I’ve uploaded 42 of the best here.

Oktoberfest

My Nikon L5 is really starting to annoy me. The image quality is great, but it’s painfully slow. It takes 10-15 seconds after I turn it on until it becomes ready to use. If I use the flash, it takes 5 seconds or longer to process a picture and get ready for the next one. I missed a lot of great shots because of the delays.

I’m planning to make the jump to a DSLR, probably a Nikon D40x.

All FCAT, all the time

This story points out what’s wrong with Florida’s educational system. There’s too much emphasis on preparing for the FCAT (a standardized test), rather than actually learning.

One teacher told parents that there would be no curriculum other than FCAT practice until after the writing test in February. This is for a class of the most advanced students in the school. “I don’t teach any literature at all until after that time,â€? the English teacher said. “I’m sure you all understand.â€?

The reason for this madness is the FCAT rates the schools, not the students, and determines the school’s funding.

DNC to Florida: Drop Dead

Via Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire:

Marc Ambinder has a copy of a letter DNC Chairman Howard Dean sent to each Democratic presidential candidate today, strongly urging “to do
your part and support the action of the Rules and Bylaws Committee” finding Florida’s advanced primary in non-compliance with delegate selection rules last weekend.

They can go f*** themselves. They just lost my vote. I’m planning to not vote in the next election. There’s no way I’d vote for a republican, and the democrats don’t deserve my vote either. Yes, I know I can vote for the Libertarian candidate, but I’d be making a bigger statement by not voting.

Tropical Storm Dean

The first storm this season that may threaten us. It’s still too early to tell what’s going to happen, but the maps show it becoming a Category 3 hurricane early next week and heading in our general direction.

Jim Naugle is a Jackass

We can always count on Fort Lauderdale mayor Jim Naugle for making a dumb statement or stirring up controversy. Thanks to term limits, he can’t run again, so he’s being more outrageous than ever. His latest pet idea is a $250,000 robotic toilet aimed to prevent the “homosexual activity” that he said plagues other public restrooms by only allowing occupants to stay inside for a short time before the door opens.

“We’re trying to provide a family environment where people can take their children who need to use the bathroom,” he said, “without having to worry about a couple of men in there” says Naugle, even though police say sex in restrooms is no longer a hot crime. He talked about the illicit sex recently in public meetings, in an interview and in e-mails to residents. There’s already a campaign to Flush Naugle by emailing a virtual roll of toilet paper (or they could just TP city hall 😉

Of course gays aren’t Naugle’s only target. Last year rejecting an affordable housing law he said:

people are mistaken if they think they are entitled to an affordable single-family house on a 40-hour-a-week work routine. People need to work more hours and settle for a condo or townhouse.

“I’m supposed to subsidize some schlock sitting on the sofa and drinking a beer, who won’t work more than 40 hours a week?” he asked.

“I deny that there is a problem. You can buy condos all day for $160,000.”

“One person is working two or three jobs to get ahead and one person isn’t,” he said. “Should we tax the person that’s working hard to get ahead to pay for the one who isn’t?”

Thanks to statements like those, Naugle made it to Democratic Underground’s Top 10 Conservative Idiots list.

In the middle of it

The courtroom spectacle over Anna Nicole Smith is taking place not too far from here in the Broward County courthouse. One of my friends works for a law firm, so she happened to be at the courthouse today. She ended up getting stuck there over lunch time because of the crowd. She even got to see some of the people involved.
