For the first time in a few years, my flight didn’t suck. I breezed through checkin and security, all of my flights arrived on time and my baggage arrived with me.
Personal
Off to WWDC
I’m getting ready to leave for San Francisco early in the morning. My flight is at 6:45 so I’ll probably have to be up around 3AM. I change flights in Atlanta and arrive in San Francisco around noon, so I’ll have plenty of time to pick up my badge.
Mystery Solved
My great aunt was able to identify the people in the photo I posted a few days ago. It was taken in New York in 1909 or 1910. The girl at the top left is my grandmother.
Things I don't care about
These were the front page stories in today’s Sun-Sentinel:
- Dancing with the stars
- Miley Cyrus
- the Dolphins’ personnel changes
None of which I care about in the least. The Dolphins’ hirings, firings, and trades was also the lead story on the evening news. I guess there’s nothing more important happening in the world. Nobody died in Iraq. Food is abundant in Haiti. The economy is booming.
Five years ago on this day
Today is the 5th birthday of the iTunes Music Store, which also means I’ve been living in this condo for exactly 5 years.
April 28, 2003 was a very hectic day for me as I sold my old condo, bought this one, and moved. I packed and moved everything from my old condo, went to one realtor’s office to sign the papers selling my old condo, and then taking the payment to another realtors office where I bought this condo using the payment from the first one for a down-payment and closing costs (for the period between those transactions, I was homeless). Finally I was able to have my stuff moved into this condo.
My old condo has changed hands several times since I moved out, their maintenance got a lot higher, and they had some serious damage from hurricane Wilma.
I knew Apple was making a big announcement that day, but I had no idea what it was and I couldn’t wait to get online to find out about it. Of course I didn’t have my DSL working yet, so that night I used a dial-up connection to read the news and posted it to MacMegasite.
Finished house painting
The same guys who renovated my kitchen just finished painting my apartment and putting down new laminate flooring in the living room. They also put in a new ceiling fan in the dining room and fixed lots of little things that were never quite right, such as TV cables which were run under the carpet rather than being properly routed through the wall and outlets that were switched when they really shouldn’t be.
These people are paying for a car wash
I hate finding flyers stuck under my windshield wipers. Even worse if the flyer is actually stuck to my window. Today I found a card glued to my windshield advertising apartments at 2500 NW 9th Ave in Fort Lauderdale, (954) 234-8581. It was actually glued, probably resulting from rain during the night, so I had to scrape it off, leaving a mess.
Death and taxes
I got my taxes taken care of today by two wonderful ladies in Pompano Beach who do an amazing job. They’ve been doing my taxes for the last three years.
This year I also had to have them do my late mother’s taxes from 2005, the year she died, for which I ended up having to pay over $500. I wasn’t able to find receipts or bills for her medical expenses, so they couldn’t be claimed, which would most likely have meant not having to pay anything.
Looking at my mother’s paperwork brought back memories of her final few months, which she spent mostly in the hospital. Since this morning I’ve been thinking of her and feeling depressed. I wish I didn’t have to remember her that way, dying of lung cancer, which is really a horrible way to go.
