Thanks to a friend I now have a gmail address! I don’t have any invitations to send out yet, but when I do, I’ll announce it, after giving a few friends first choice.
Web
Site notes
I’ve been trying a new weblog editor and had it misconfigured so comments & trackbacks weren’t enabled. I’ve fixed it.
I made some changes to the design to prepare for possibly switching to different software. I have also stopped updating my politics weblog, since the software I’m considering will only support a single weblog. I will occasionally post political items here if something is important enough or makes me mad enough.
I’ve also added two new categories: web, for web site related items, and local.
Movable Type RIP
With MT being commercialized and the free version crippled, I’m considering moving to something else. I started with Radio Userland and later moved to MT for a more flexible open product. Now maybe it’s time to move on again. I’m considering maybe pMachine or Drupal (which I already use for a few other sites), or just using Blogger.

MacMegasite Hacked
MacMegasite was hacked this afternoon, for the first time since I installed the patched version of Nuke. They found a hole that the security patches didn’t fix. I repaired the damage and added a single line of code to patch that hole.
I’m now seriously considering switching to Drupal.
File Downloads at WorldBeatPlanet
Since WorldBeatPlanet and ShareYourMusic.com share the same Drupal installation, I just enabled the file upload module at WorldBeatPlanet. I created a new user role, Artist, to allow uploading & maintaining tunes. Any user can download tunes.
ShareYourMusic
ShareYourMusic.com was mentioned in the latest issue of MacWorld, so it’s starting to see a bit more activity. I still have plenty of bandwidth & disk space to handle it. I’m planning to upgrade to Drupal 4.4 this weekend.
Again
MacMegasite was hacked again, using yet another SQL injection hole I missed the last time. I patched a few more holes & I’m now getting ready to upgrade to Nuke 7.1 with the security patches from NukeCops.
There was little damage; they only changed the banners.
Comment Spam
I just made some script changes which should cut down on the amount of comment spam I receive. Lately, I get 1-3 spams a day.
Hacked
MacMegasite was hacked this morning. Luckily I do daily backups of the database, so I reverted to the backup done at Midnight, shortly before it was hacked.
I was able to figure out how it was done easily by looking at the raw logs, and I patched that particular hole and several similar ones. I also took a good look at Nuke’s code and I could see why it’s so susceptible to SQL injection hacks. I also put in a simple fix that will prevent similar hacks.
MacMegasite Moved
I’ve moved MacMegasite to this host after it was down all day with no response from Geek-Hosting. It should take a day or so for the DNS change to take effect.
I now have a web hosting service I like that provides good support and I can host all of my sites and resell hosting services for $20/month.
