The night before WWDC

I’m really excited about WWDC, which starts tomorrow. I’ll probably go to sleep early, so I can get up at 5AM to wait in line for the keynote. Today I went on the pilgrimage to the Apple Company store in Cupertino.

1 Infinite oop

Yesterday I met with a realtor and looked at several places in San Leandro. I found one that I really liked, which I’m still waiting to hear from.

I found a place I like

Unfortunately I’ve been sick with an upset stomach since I arrived here. To top it off, I chipped a tooth today. Hopefully I’ll be able to hold out until I get home so I won’t have to miss any part of WWDC.

WWDC

It’s official – I’m going to WWDC. I have my ticket and I booked my flights & hotel.

I’ll be staying a few extra days to look at some homes in the bay area and hopefully buy one. I’ve decided on San Leandro for its convenient location and reasonable home prices. Most places in San Leandro have a pretty high walk score, and it’s 30 minutes from San Francisco.

My thoughts on the iPad

The iPad looks awesome, and of course I want one, but most likely I won’t get an iPad for one reason: it can’t replace either my MacBook or iPhone, so I’d have to travel with three different devices. I would definitely get an iPad rather than a Kindle or Nook, if I did get an eBook reader.

Since the iPad doesn’t have a camera and isn’t usable as a phone, I still need an iPhone. Since it can’t run Mac software I need such as XCode and web development software such as Coda or BBEdit (or MarsEdit, which I’m using now), I’ll still need to use my MacBook.

The Magic Mouse is a winner

I’ll cut right to the point: the Magic Mouse is the best mouse I’ve ever used. The scrolling is so smooth & effortless that when I first started using it, I kept scrolling around just to admire how nice it feels. Unlike the Mighty Mouse, the right click works easily and I’ve never had any false clicks. I haven’t had much of an opportunity to use the swipe gestures, since not too many applications support it. The only feature I miss is the middle button click. I suspect it may be possible to implement it in a future software upgrade.

Front View Side View

The Magic Mouse requires a software update, which is available from Apple’s download page. Without the software, none of the gestures work and the mouse movement is erratic. The new mouse preference panel lets you enable the various gestures.

Magic Mouse Preferences

I ordered the Magic Mouse as soon as Apple announced it, and it finally arrived today. The first thing I noticed was the minimal packaging. The shipping box contained only the small plastic box with some padding instead of the usual big cardboard boxes. Unfortunately a bit of sticky tape on the bottom left a bit of residue on the mouse, although it came off easily.

In-app purchase now available for free apps

Apple just sent the following email to iPhone developers:

In App Purchase for free apps.png

In the future, perhaps I can use that to upgrade the free version of ICHC to Pro features instead of requiring a separate purchase, although I can see some logistical problems with it. In order to allow current paid users to receive updates, I’d still have to support both versions. I don’t want to require them to purchase 2.0 again when I release it.

I Can Has Cheezburger free version STILL not approved

I submitted version 1.5.2 of both the free & pro versions at the same time. As you know, ICHC Pro was approved a few days ago. The free version is still in review.

I got a call from Apple today asking about a contest (which I figured out was probably one of the ads). Thanks to AT&T’s wonderful wireless service, the call was dropped right in the middle. I wasn’t able to return the call and they haven’t called me back.

U CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER NAO!

I Can Has Cheezburger ad free 1.5.1 (actually 1.5.2, which I replaced while 1.5.1 was still in review) is now ready for sale. The free version, which I submitted at the same time, is still in review, although the old version 1.5 is available again.

You can download ICHC (ad-free) here, or if you prefer the free version, download it here.

New features in this version:

  • Shake to shuffle
  • Movies show web page immediately instead of click to play graphic
  • Action sheet no longer shows ‘save to photos’ for movies
  • Can now email images rather than just links in OS 3.0
  • Allows you to log into ICHC (pro version only)
  • Supports movies from Viddler at FAILblog and other sites

Note that not all Viddler movies are playable; the person who created it has to specifically enable downloading for it to work.

App Store Tip

If you remove an application from sale, updating it does NOT automatically make it available again. You need to go to “manage your applications” in iTunes Connect, click on “Edit information”, go to the pricing tab, and select any stores you want to sell it in. After you save changes, it will show up as ‘ready for sale’ on your application page. You can also do this without updating the application or if it’s still in review. This is hidden in the FAQ.

I made both I Can Has Cheezburger (ad free) 1.5.2 and ICHC ad supported 1.5 (v1.5.2 is still in review) available a few hours ago. It still hasn’t appeared yet, but hopefully they should be available before too long.

U CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER! (almost?)

I just got an email from Apple saying that I Can Has Cheezburger (ad free) is ready for sale. Nothing about the free version, which I submitted at the same time.

However, as of 11PM (3 hours after I received the email), it still shows ‘removed by developer’. Something is badly screwed up. I had pulled the previous version while waiting for this update to be approved, but it changed from ‘in review’ to ‘removed by developer’ rather than being ‘available for sale’.
