For the second time in several weeks, Miami-Dade police officers have used a 50,000-volt taser on a child. Last week, police officers used a taser on a 6-year-old boy threatening them with a piece of broken glass, and now it’s been disclosed that a taser was used on an unarmed 12-year-old girl who was skipping school on Nov. 5.
I’m sure both kids could have been restrained without the use of a taser. This was completely uncalled for and an abuse of power. Adults have been known to die of cardiac arrest after being zapped with a taser, so there was a real possibility of death or serious injury in both cases. I hope both cases are reviewed and there are strict rules against using tasers on children in the future.
